Cheap plastic construction : 3M Ergonomic Mouse, Optical, USB/PS2 Compatible, Large Size, Black (EM500GPL)

I had pretty bad hand pain from my microsoft wireless mouse. I bought three of these based on the reviews I read here. The day I started using it the pain disapeared, however I gave my teenage son one too and that is when the bad news arrived. Within a week he had snapped the mouse in two. I figured he was just being a teenager until a month later when i broke mine in half. I took the third one and guess what, same exact way the third one broke. The base and the handle are connected with a plastic snap like joint. The joint occurs in the very place torque is likely to occur and there are three little tabs of plastic that are less than 1/8th of an inch thick keeping it together. Its amazing an engineer at 3M could think this was a good design. Oh well. I just threw them away, not sure if i could have returned them to 3M. They work so well ergonomically, once you get used to them, that I will probably buy more.

Weird angle of trackball caused me problems : Kensington Expert Mouse Optical USB Trackball for PC or Mac 64325

As a longtime trackball user (with one of my favorites being an older model of the Kensington Expert mouse) I was very excited about this one. The features were outstanding, the trackball movement and precision flawless, and the scroll ring was very useful. However, the trackball housing itself is constructed on a very steep incline. Even with the wrist pad that's included, it put my fingers in a big strain to operate the ball (I have average sized hands). It's tilted up, so that you have to reach up and out to use the ball. This puts strain on the tendons of your whole hand, and also presses the nerve cluster at the base of your hand against the pad or table. After using it for about a week, my hand was in agony.

Earlier Kensington Expert Mice were almost flat, and were very comfortable. It's baffling to me why they made this change in the design.

Kensington did take this mouse back for a refund even though I had used it for a week (all I could stand). It may be that this unit is comfortable for someone with very large hands. I've gone back to my Logitech Marble Mouse, regretfully -- if not for the incline, the Kensington would have truly been the perfect trackball.

There are very few standalone "digital pen" mice available; people who wish to use the ergonomic pen design often have to cough up additional funds for a digitizer tablet [...] that is bulky. This particular model has been around for several years, apparently, but they have not updated it.

I bought this specifically for ergonomic reasons and because I did not want a bulky tablet component (though I do own a Wacom for special uses). It's a bit chunky; while it was uncomfortable for me to use, it's probably fine for others. It feels light, and while this is could be a good thing if you tend to get finger-fatigued, the cord hanging off the end unfortunately seems to weigh all that much more.

The most important problem for me, however, was that this digital pen-mouse doesn't seem to be calibrated correctly. A 2003 review article elsewhere also pointed out this problem: Assuming the mouse button is supposed to be positioned at the top of the pen where your index finder rests, you cannot write or draw in a straight line across the screen. The cursor will slant upwards from left to right, effectively rendering any drawing potential useless; the other article also commented that the handwriting recognition suffers from this weirdness. You can try to hold the pen at a different rotation, but it's not perfectly round, so it will end up being more uncomfortable.

For average mousing, I suppose people can get used to the quirk, but for uses that require a bit more accuracy, look elsewhere. It's a good idea, and I really hope someone will finally deliver a good pen-mouse that doesn't use ink or special paper or pad.
